Angie’s Update: Navigating a Season of Change

HomeBlogAngie’s Update: Navigating a Season of Change
Angela Lewis Dmello

Dear NYFS Supporters,

It is said that “change is the only constant”, and lately, that has never felt truer! Even Minnesota’s weather is keeping us on our toes. My grandmother used to say that March is actually “in like a lamb, out like a lion,” as we often see the month start off warm. And sure enough, just when we think spring is here – we get another blast of winter. I am personally hoping for fewer blizzards and warmer temperatures!

NYFS is also navigating this season of change in federal funding and priorities. Fortunately, because of the work we’ve done over the past few years to diversify our funding, we are in a stronger position to weather these shifts in the short term. By securing support from a variety of sources, we’ve been able to remain flexible and resilient in the face of challenges.

At the same time, we know that ongoing changes – especially possible deep cuts to critical funding for Domestic and Sexual Violence services and Medicaid—could have serious long-term effects. More than half of our mental health clients rely on Medicaid to access the care they need. If federal funding is reduced, many families will face impossible choices. We believe health care is a human right, and we are doing everything that we can to advocate for continued access. We invite you to stand with us in this effort. Check out our partner for more information: NAMI MN at https://namimn.org/medicaid/

No matter what happens, our board, leadership, and staff remain committed to our mission, vision, values, and the people we serve. Ensuring access to care is at the heart of everything we do, and we will continue showing up for our community. That means making sure everyone—regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, income level, language, or country of origin—can get support attuned to their individual needs. By staying true to who we are, we create stability for our staff and clients, even in times of change. NYFS is here, and we aren’t going anywhere.

We are grateful for you – our supporters, neighbors, and friends. Your belief in our work allows us to be here for you, our community members and partners, and makes all the difference. Together we can continue to make sure that everyone has access to the care and support they deserve.

Best,

Angie
