The Youth Pathways Program is an alternative to the traditional juvenile justice system that increases focus on the youth’s needs and addresses underlying issues that contributed to negative behaviors that adversely affect the youth, their family, and their community.
Youth Diversion: A Restorative Approach
The Youth Diversion services at NYFS are designed for youth who have committed a first-time or low-level offense. Through this program, young people work to repair harm caused by their actions, take responsibility, and learn decision-making skills to prevent future involvement with the justice system. This repair work can include volunteering for community service projects, writing apology letters, attending seminars, and paying restitution. Rather than facing formal charges, participants engage in a structured, supportive process that allows them to learn and grow from their experiences.
NYFS partners with families, law enforcement, and schools to ensure each youth has access to the resources they need. The program provides individualized support, connecting participants with services such as therapy, educational resources, and skill-building opportunities to help them move forward in a positive direction.
I am finally getting back into school and prior [to this program] I didn’t see that as a possibility for me

Community Connections: Building Skills for the Future
Community Connections is a life skills program designed for youth and young adults who are looking for additional support in planning for their futures. The program covers a wide range of topics, including goal setting, career exploration, budgeting, and daily routines.
Meetings take place weekly in various community locations like community centers, libraries, and a tour of a local community college, allowing participants to engage in hands-on learning and connect with mentors and peers. The program was developed based on client requests for additional support beyond diversion, addressing challenges like isolation and uncertainty about the future.
Something about myself that I’m proud of is changing my mindset so that I can have a better future. This program has helped me a lot.
