NYFS is proud to offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate student internships. We are deeply invested in the development of the mental health and social services profession, and pride ourselves in a robust and intentional training experience for our interns.
Undergraduate Internships
NYFS accepts undergraduate internships for 10 or more hours per week for a semester or longer. We have internships in development/communications, client services administration, diversion services, and community connections programs. We are always looking for folks interested in the human services, social work, family social science, criminal justice, and related fields.
Graduate Internships
NYFS accepts graduate level interns who are seeking clinical hours. We offer a trauma-informed, culturally responsive training experience focused on serving youth and families. Our intern therapists are completing their training in clinical social work, marriage and family therapy, and professional counseling. We have excellent supervisors invested in intern learning, and we use a cohort-based training model.
NYFS places clinical interns in our clinic-based services (Shoreview and White Bear Lake), and in school-based mental health. All of our interns have the opportunity to get specialized training in trauma informed care, secondary traumatic stress management for work sustainability and wellness, and specific interventions including Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), and Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET).
Steps Toward Equitable Practices Scholar (STEPS) Program
NYFS is proud to offer our Steps Toward Equitable Practices Scholar Program. This is an internship program focused on facilitating psychotherapy training for graduate level BIPOC interns. The STEPS program accepts 4-5 scholars annually. Our program offers a $8,000 annual stipend, specialized training in trauma treatment interventions with high efficacy with BIPOC clients, and clinical supervision and/or mentorship from a BIPOC therapist.
