April Thompson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Indian Studies, with minors in Psychology, Health Education and Substance Misuse, a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from the University of North Dakota and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
April has a deep understanding of historical and intergenerational trauma, which strengthens her cross-cultural work. Her focus is on empowering community, particularly children and honoring kinship systems. She is an experienced social work professional who values relationship-building and creating positive environments.
April is providing school-based therapy services to children aged 3-5 in early childhood and Kindergarten classrooms within the Mounds View School District, with the goal of creating services that effectively support children and families.
April is deeply passionate about wellness and fitness, viewing it as a lifestyle. She is committed to movement and prioritizes taking care of her mind, body and soul. She is also a personal trainer with experience working with older adults, creating fitness regimes tailored to their needs. April has been a strong advocate for breastfeeding families. She has been featured on billboards, in WIC offices and brochures for the American Indian and Alaska Native Families U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the American Indian Breastfeeding Promotion Group of Arizona.
April has held various roles in social work, education and tribal services, including being a Dakota Language Teacher, Reading Coach, Cultural Liaison, and Program Management.
